Museums & Memory: Challenging Histories

21-23 February 2014

Waterford, Ireland | City Hall

The 2014 Annual Conference promoted by Irish Museum Association will focus 'Museums & Memory: Challenging Histories'

Taking as its title , the conference will take the ‘decade of commemorations’ as a starting point to examine how different societies & nations memorialise and remember the historical events which shape their national identity. Invited speakers and conference participants will share their experiences and expertise on a wide range of topics, including: museums as storehouses of memory and the role of these in addressing contested and complex histories; the relationship between public history and private or personal memory; and cross-practice approaches to commemoration.

The IMA is delighted to be co-organising this event with Waterford Museum of Treasures and that the conference will be held in Waterford in their year of commemoration of the 1100 anniversary of the foundation of the city.
An annual event, this is the major event of the year in the Irish museum world, being the only conference that gives museum practitioners the chance to meet and exchange views. Details of previous IMA conferences are online at http://www.irishmuseums.org/annual-conference/, where you will be able to view the programmes and abstracts through the various links.

The organising committee invites members and professionals working in the museums, galleries and cultural institutions to present short papers. They will select a series of 15-minute presentations, in response to the overall theme of the Conference. The submission proposals - reporting: title, short bio (150 words max) and short abstract of presentation (180 words max) - will have to be sent to office@irishmuseums.com by the 2nd December, 2013.
